Welcome to the website of theatre maker and performance artist a smith

The working name of Andy Smith, a UK born artist based in Oslo, a smith combines his interests in theatre and performance with contemporary writing and conceptual art. His work is a social and political practice that considers and engages its audience and looks at our environment, our circumstances and our spaces. Amongst other things a smith is in interested in the everyday, our sense of location, our use of language and our notions of nationality and identity. 

Recent solo projects includes The Ibsen Hut (2006), a specially commissioned work for The National Theatre, Norway, and innvandrer (2007), a solo performance about moving from one country to another. In 2009 a smith will premiere the next two days of everything, a new solo piece about travel, oil, the changing climate and taking care. This performance is a co-production with Black Box Teater, Oslo and BIT Teatergarasjen in Bergen. Following performances at these venues, it will tour Norway and abroad through 2009/10. 

a smith is also an associate of the UK company news from nowhere, with whom he has worked as a co-director (along with with Karl James of The Dialogue Project) on witer and performer Tim Crouch's award winning plays An Oak Tree (2005) and ENGLAND (2007). In September 2009 this team will premiere The Author, a new play by Tim Crouch commissioned by and produced at The Royal Court Theatre, London.

In addition, a smith has also recently collaborated with Rasmus Jørgensen on the performance works Me No You and Pappa Pust, and with Amund Sjølie Sveen on a performance for young people in Norway called hvor er du?
