a smith projects in 2008

innvandrer

innvandrer (immigrant in Norwegian) is a work about migration from one country to another. It is a performance that tells the story of some of the things that have happened to me since I moved from England to Norway in May 2006. innvandrer attempts to address some of the issues of migration from a personal perspective. It thinks about how what happens and how it feels when we undertake a move from one place to another, one language to another, one culture to another.

innvandrer was supported by Norsk Kulturråd, and was first performed at UKS, Oslo in October 2007 as part of the UKS/Black Box Teater performance program 07. It was subsequently performed at Rom For Dans as part of Showbox 2007, and will be performing around Norway throughout 2008. The work is performed in limited Norwegian with a little English, and was designed to take place in theatres, galleries, or any quiet room that could serve this purpose. It  has no shipping costs and few technical requirements. If you have any questions or are interested in booking a performance of innvandrer you can find contact details on the home page.

end time

end time is the working title of the next a smith project. Thanks to the support of a grant from Norsk Kulturråd a text is currently in progress, with plans to further develop and produce a performance in 2009.

end time takes as its starting point the idea that at some time in the near future we will witness some kind of global catastrophe. We might be coming to the end of our oil supply, for example. The ice caps are melting and our tides are rising. We are told that we live with the constant possibility of terrorist attack. Every day in many newspapers we can read how sometime soon a natural or man made disaster is likely to happen. Endless books (both pessimistic and optimistic) are being written and published concerning these matters. It can often feel hopeless: that there is little or nothing effective we can do. These things are out of our reach, beyond our control.

end time will attempt to think small about these big subjects. It will try to investigate, explore and reflect on these issues in an understandable and human way: what will the consequences be to us or our offspring if the oil does run out? How are we really going to deal with the ongoing pressures of migration? How do these things relate to us and our everyday?

I am currently looking for partners, venues, advice and help in the production. If you require any more information please do not hesitate to get in touch.

hvor er du?

We had a brilliant time and response to hvor er du? in November, and we were lucky enough to take it to The Barents Spektakel in Kirkenes, Norway and Nikel in Russian in January. More performances and tours are being discussed for the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009.
